What Are Skin Wrinkles?
A skin wrinkle is a ridge or crease on the
surface of the skin. Your skin can wrinkle from being in water
for too long a period of time. But the skin wrinkles that we
are concerned about usually appear as a result of aging
processes.
What Causes Wrinkles?
The wrinkling in your skin
is caused by habitual facial expressions, aging, sun damage,
smoking, poor hydration, and various other factors. The skin
is made up of 3 layers. These are the dermis, epidermis and
subcutaneous tissue. The epidermis is the outer layer that you
readily see. It’s function is to act as a barrier to the
external environment. The second layer of skin is the dermis.
The dermis contains the structural elements of the skin or the
connective tissue. There are a variety of types of connective
tissue with different functions. Now the connection between
the dermis and the epidermis is an important structure. The
dermal-epidermal connection interlocks forming fingerlike
projections called rete ridges. The cells of the epidermis
receive their nutrients from the blood vessels in the dermis.
The rete ridges add to the surface area of the epidermis that
is exposed to these blood vessels and the needed nutrients.
Subcutaneous Tissue The base layer of skin is the subcutaneous
tissue containing fat cells. These fat cells provide
insulation to the body and make the skin look plump or full.
How Your Skin Ages As you age the epidermal cells become
thinner and less sticky. The thinner cells make the skin look
noticeably thinner. The decreased stickiness of the cells
diminish the effectiveness of the barriers function allowing
moisture to be released instead of being kept in the skin.
This causes dryness. The number of epidermal cells shrinks by
10% per decade and they regenerate more slowly as we age
making the skin less able to repair itself as quickly. The
result of aging on the dermal layer are important. Not only
does the dermal layer thin, but it also produces less
collagen. Additionally the elastin fibers that provide the
elasticity wear out. These changes in the skin cause the skin
to wrinkle and sag. Also, the sebaceous glands increase in
size but produce less sebum, and the number of sweat glands
decreases also. These two changes lead to dry skin. This is
just the tip of the iceberg. There are a lot of things
happening as our skin ages. I hope this has helped a little
without being too boring.
